The basics

What is forex replay?

Forex replay (market replay, bar replay) rewinds a currency chart to a past date and plays it forward one bar at a time. Everything to the right of the current candle stays hidden, so every decision you make uses only the information a trader had at that moment.

That is what makes replay useful: you can practice a setup a hundred times in an afternoon, return to the exact day a strategy failed, or rehearse a news release before trading the next one live. A demo account can't do that — it only streams today's prices in real time. And unlike a code-based backtester, replay tests the discretionary decisions you actually make.

Charting platforms often limit replay on free plans — TradingView's free plan replays daily bars only. ForexThrive runs the replay in your browser from 1-minute bars and fills your orders against the replayed prices with spread, commission, and overnight swap applied — then keeps the full record: every trade, the equity curve, drawdown, win rate, and expectancy.

How it works

How to replay the forex market in four steps

  1. Sign in with Google

No download and no card. Your free account opens straight into a ready-made replay game with the major FX pairs, crypto, and FX futures.

  2. Pick a pair and a timeframe

EUR/USD on the 5-minute, BTC/USD on the hourly, a futures contract on the 4-hour — the chart rebuilds any timeframe from 1-minute bars.

  3. Press play — or step one bar

Set the replay speed, pause before a news release, step candle by candle through a setup. Future price action stays hidden until it prints.

  4. Trade it like it's live

Market, limit, stop-limit, bracket, and OTA orders, filled against the replayed price with spread, commission, and overnight swap applied.

Backtest → forward test

One session, from history to live market — on your schedule.

Most tools make you choose: backtest on the past, or forward test on a demo in real time. In ForexThrive it's one continuous session. A game can end up to a year in the future, so the strategy you validate on history keeps running on fresh, unseen data — with one record from the first bar to the latest.

  1. Session startAny date in 15+ years of history
  2. TodayReplay switches to live data, delayed 1 minute
  3. Session endUp to 1 year in the future
Timeline of a ForexThrive session: it starts on any historical date and replays history as a backtest; at the present it switches to 1-minute-delayed live data as a forward test; it can end up to one year in the future.
  1. 01 · Backtest

    Replay history at your pace

Start a game on any date in 15+ years of data. Step bar by bar or fast-forward — every trade, drawing, and statistic is stored in the session.

  2. 02 · Today

    Hit the present, keep trading

When the replay reaches today, the same session switches to live market data delayed by one minute. Balance, open positions, and stats carry straight over — your backtest becomes a forward test without starting again.

  3. 03 · Away? Catch up

    Time off is never skipped

The replay engine only moves while the app is open. Close it for two weeks and those two weeks are waiting when you return: replay them up to today in a few clicks, trading every bar you'd otherwise have missed.

Creating games — with your own dates, instruments, and trading conditions — is part of the prepaid plan. The free tier gives you one predefined game (Feb 22 – May 23, 2022) to try the engine.

FAQ

Forex replay questions

  • What is forex replay?

Forex replay — also called market replay or bar replay — plays historical currency prices back one candle at a time, hiding everything that comes next. You make trading decisions as the chart unfolds, exactly as you would live, which makes it the closest thing to practicing on real markets without risking money.

  • Is forex replay free on ForexThrive?

Yes. Signing in with Google creates a free account that opens a predefined replay game covering February 22 to May 23, 2022, with the major FX pairs, crypto, and FX futures, 40+ indicators, replay speed control, and the AI assistant. The prepaid plan ($8–$23 per month, never auto-renewing) lets you create games on any dates.

  • What's the difference between bar replay and backtesting?

Bar replay is the method; backtesting is the goal. Replaying a chart bar by bar lets you backtest a discretionary strategy by hand: you take the trades your rules call for, and the simulator records every position and computes win rate, drawdown, and other statistics. Code-based backtesters test automated rules instead.

  • How far back can I replay the forex market?

Prepaid games can start on any date across more than 15 years of history — the game creator goes back to 2006 — and can end up to one year in the future. The free game is fixed to February 22 – May 23, 2022, a volatile stretch that includes several central-bank rate decisions.

  • Can I replay up to today and keep going?

Yes, on the prepaid plan. When a replay reaches the present, the same session switches to live market data delayed by one minute, so a backtest turns into a forward test without starting over. The replay only advances while the app is open, so time away is replayed on your return.

  • Does the replay include spreads and trading costs?

Yes. Every fill includes the spread and commission, and positions held overnight are charged or credited swap based on historical interest-rate differentials. On the prepaid plan you can match your own broker's spread, leverage, and commission; the free game uses standard conditions.

  • What's the smallest timeframe I can replay?

The engine replays one-minute OHLC bars, and every higher timeframe is built from them. It doesn't replay tick or seconds-level data, so it suits day trading and swing trading better than sub-minute scalping.
